26th January 1950 was the date on which the Constitution of India came into force replacing the Government of India Act 1935 and since then 26th January is observed as the Republic day of India although India observed 15th August 1947 as the day of independence. The day 26th January is one of the most important days in Indian history as it was the day of enforcement of the constitution of India and making India a truly sovereign state. It was the day, the countrymen realized the dream of Mahatma Gandhi and remember the numerous freedom fighters who, fought for and sacrificed their lives for the cause of Independence of India. Dr. Ambedkar was the pioneer in making the constitution. Federalism and the British Parliamentary system jointly formed the basis of the constitution. Sir Anthony Eden, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (April 1955-January 1957) said, ‘‘Of all the experiments in government, which have been attempted since the beginning of time, I believe that the Indian venture into parliamentary government is the most exciting. A vast subcontinent is attempting to apply to its tens and thousands of millions a system of free democracy... It is a brave thing to try to do so. The Indian venture is not a pale imitation of our practice at home, but a magnified and multiplied reproduction on a scale we have never dreamt of. If it succeeds, its influence on Asia is incalculable for good”. Granville Austin, who was an American Constitutional authority, wrote that what the Indian Constituent Assembly began was “perhaps the greatest political venture since that originated in Philadelphia in 1787.”

Republic Day Celebration:

The Republic Day is celebrated all over India. Of course, the day is especially observed in the capital, New Delhi. The occasion begins with a solemn reminder of the sacrifice of the martyrs who died for independence and for succeeding wars for the defense of the sovereignty of the country. The day is also observed to award the medals of bravery to those who have exceptional courage in different situations. A spectacular parade becomes an attraction of the occasion. Every year a grand parade is held in the capital, from the Rajghat, along the Vijaypath where regiments of the army, the Navy and the Air force march past in all their finery and official decorations. Pageant of different states displays their activity that brings out the diversity and richness of the culture of India giving a festive air to the occasion.

The Preambles of Democracy: The Indians might be proud of sustaining democracy since six decades but definitely would not feel satisfied looking to the shortages in different sectors. India might be shown progress in economy but not in giving proper education to all the children, proper training to all the youths and proper adjustment at work to all of them to earn their living. It is still observed that most of the children are not going to schools. The people with lower income is poor, most of them live in huts and mud houses and many living under open skies. There are people starving and spending days without food. Many are weak and frustrated where most of them have been declared as Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes or Dalits who have been given separate colonies to live in and they are recognized unequal. Similarity is also shown  with few Muslim communities too. Frustration leads them to become a terrorist party and friend of neighbor state Pakistan who indulge in terrorist strike to snatch Kashmir from India. There is patriotic song of unity but party tickets are mostly distributed on the basis of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and Dalits.

Unity of Tricolor:

The Indian national Flag has united people of all states irrespective of Caste, religion and language and that is the greatest achievement of Indian democracy. The country has shortcoming in all fronts but the country is rich by the blessings of God. It is blessed with mountains, rivers, minerals, jungles, fertile land, gases, petroleum, coals, irons and other basics of progress. The country could not achieve the desired targets. It is because the people who had been occupying seats of power were not competent people. These people have made the democracy into a state of bureaucracy. It is not correct to say that these people are the true representative of the people. The political parties nominate candidates not on the basis of merits, but on other consideration. The candidates spent money in elections and when they are in power, they try their best at first to recollect that money and collect something more for the next election. Thus corruption and favoritism become day of administration. That is why there is huge corruption in 2G-Spectrum in Telecom, huge corruption in CWG (Common Wealth Game), Adarsh Housing Scam, Money laundering keeping huge amount in the Bank of Switzerland and also in every other sector beyond detectable sphere .There is democracy in the guise of party dictatorship and individual autocracy. The elected people are not working for the common people. That is the reason here in India rich are growing richer and the poor becoming poorer. 26th January is the day of introspection where the leaders should examine their activity in the sphere of development to remove the distress of the common people to make India really a democratic peaceful country, a country for all community and religion manifesting a country of 21st century of human civilization in the history of Mankind.

Excellent hub, my friend. I was a little upset to read that, "Similarity is also shown with few Muslim communities too. Frustration leads them to become a terrorist party and friend of neighbour state Pakistan who indulge in terrorist strike to snatch Kashmir from India." Remember that there are actually more Muslims living in India than there are in Pakistan... and only a minute percentage of those Muslim Indians are involved in terrorism.

And your history will tell you that the ruler of Kashmir, Maharajah Hari Singh, handed Kashmir over to India during the fracas that was occurring preparatory to and during Partition.

Rightly or wrongly, Pakistani interests were being militarily advanced, but Kashmir is predominantly Musalman, and I personally feel that the country should either be independent or part of Pakistan.

Regardless of all that, thank you once again, for a very well researched and informative hub

Happy Indian Republic Day

Hi Twilight Lawns,

My dear friend, I am delighted by reading your volatile life history in your profile. I think we are of same age. You are correct on your apparent analysis. To give you a correct picture I have to write a long answer and I am sorry that might disturb your patience. But think of in larger perspective. It is true the well beings of a particular area depend upon the will of the people. It is a tragedy of the history that India was divided and Pakistan was formed as a religious state. But the remaining India did not turned into a religious Hindu State. The foresightedness of the then political leaders was to make India a living place of all people of all religion irrespective of particular religion. After the accession of Kashmir, the land of Kashmir became a part of Indian Union. The decision of anything of Indian Union including Kashmir is not possible without the consent of the people of Indian Union as because India is a democratic country. India is a vast country consisting of different region of different language, religion and cast and community. At present Kashmir valley except Jammu and Ladak is Muslim majority (Historically a Hindu majority, a land of Kashmiri Pandit) is influenced by the sentiments of religion because of the existence of a nearby religious state Pakistan. The majority will vote on the basis of religious sentiment, how can you accept it as a vote for free and fair election. Moreover if this is allowed, the same sentiment might rise out in other regions of India, may be on language basis on South or religion basis in the North East. If so how the Indian Union will survive. Separation of Kashmir is possible only when the Indian Union will be destroyed. Under this circumstances solution not lies in confrontation or election. The solution lies with the people. If the good neighborly feeling return, the border will be null and void as you find in the States of Europe or England and French where once they were enemy to each other. Further you might astonished on hearing that the SWAT valley & Peshawar of Pakistan, now the epic-center of terrorist activity were once a territory of Buddhist Culture of non-violence where the museum of Swat is still full of Buddhist’s remnants. Religion can changed or shifted but human ethical value will never alter although religion influenced it momentarily. I feel sorry for expressing my personal views in length as because my heart goes for the people of India and Pakistan. To express the facts I like to give you an answer given by Soumyasrajan in connection with a similar question raised by our beloved hubpae American Member Mr. James Watkins against of my another article. Here it is -

soumyasrajan 7 months ago

This is for James

I think you may not have thought about the problem otherwise I am sure you would not have considered this option. Just try to think about this. In a few years from now several American cities may have majority population of Spanish speaking. It may even happen in NY, San Fransisco or LA. Who knows some cities in USA may have even Chinese speaking majority or Muslims in majority. Some smaller cities or Villages already may have this situation.

Suppose now in some of these cities there is demand from people in such cities or regions that let us have referendum, we want these areas to form a separate country or China or Mexico or Turkey or Pakistan demands that these regions have majority of them from our race or religion and they should be given right to have Independence -- are you ready for it?

Don't you feel that such possibilities do exist in USA. In many ways, in USA developments today are similar to what happened in India 100's of years back with these 100's of years of migration and amalgamation religions generation wealth making country attractive for others etc. - see description of India in two paragraphs below

Actually most American and European countries have very cohesive population today. Mainly one language or one religion people. Hence government media and press there floats such solutions for places different from theirs without much thinking.

In India there are more than 40 languages spoken, almost all religions you can think of are being practiced by millions (Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Jain Sikh etc.), color of people varies from very light color to very dark (with color of eyes from blue brown or black), body structure from vary oriental like Chinese or Japanese to Aryan-European features to very African like features or Arabic type faces. It depends on which part of India you are. In cities all over India you will see all these varieties practically every where. In many families one sibling may have very fair color and the other very dark color, One may be a Sikh other may be a Hindu.

The solution you are suggesting may make practically every square mile in India into a country and not just in India even in USA very soon you might hear similar demands, if it starts some where. Just to give you an idea, the number of Muslims in India is practically as large as that in countries like Pakistan. India is one of the largest Muslim country (still this number is about 11 percent of India's total population, now increased to about 20% due to non implementation of family planning in Muslim community because of freedom of religion).

If some solution based on religious identity is imposed, it is going to bring insecurity in the whole country not just to these Muslims but to every one. It may affect actually far off countries like USA etc.

Finally one more important point violence in Kashmir is not because of people of Kashmir or India or Pakistan, it is mainly because of army top and feudal rulers in Pakistan who are using terrorist groups to create such demands in the region to keep them in Power.

I feel problem will not go by giving in to demands of such crooked people as bribe to them or bribing them with money and arms as USA administratio9n is engaged in doing. Solution lies in improving economic conditions in India and these countries creating a business atmosphere.

Wonderful reply, my friend, and I agree with you completely. You will see by my profile that I was born in Quetta, Baluchistan, British India. My place of birth changed its name several times in my lifetime: British India, India, Baluchistan (for a day), West Pakistan, Pakistan.

I know several Pakistanis, intelligent young men, who agree with me that the whole of the subcontinent which was part of the British Raj should be one country: India.

I don't like the idea of a country created or divided on ethnic or religious grounds. I, as you are aware, can call myself by many names, as a person, but could I honestly recite the extract from Sir Walter Scott’s ‘The lay of the last Minstrel’ with any real belief in the words I was saying?

“Breathes there the man, with soul so dead,

Who never to himself hath said,

This is my own, my native land!

Whose heart hath ne'er within him burn'd,

As home his footsteps he hath turn'd,

From wandering on a foreign strand!

If such there breathe, go, mark him well;

For him no Minstrel raptures swell”

No, I feel that I have loyalty to several countries, Wales England and Australia all being in there… so the fragmentation of any country upsets me greatly. By doing that, I feel that my birthright and my own personal history is being eroded.

Enough said

Twilight Lawns,

Yes, I completely sympathies with you for your birth right in Quetta of United British India. I personally believe even today India would have been a better country in the world had it been in the British Emperor. If the name had brought Indian sentiments boiling, it could be an Emperor of United British-Indian Emperor. It is no secret that it was the civilized British who taught the Indians what ever the little the Indians learnt in the skill of administration of a country. In my life time of staying five years in Manchester of U.K I realized how efficiently the British Police administered the law and order even in night and the traffic without any whistling. I expressed my personal view from my personal experience. Thanks for sharing.
