Function of Neuron during and after Stroke:
76
Effect of Stroke:
When a stroke strikes, the supply of blood to the parts of brain get severely interrupted causing the shortage of oxygen. Consequently, Brain-cells either get seriously damaged or die and disrupt local brain function. The brain is in constant need of oxygen like a burning fire. During a stroke, even if a single blood vessel is blocked, a part of the brain becomes starved of oxygen and nutrients. This results in the destruction of neurons on that part of the brain, leading to permanent loss of function in the parts of the body. A stoke is the leading cause of adult disability. But the research of medical science revealed that the brain sustains to survive to fight to the last. Within weeks of a stroke, new blood vessels begin to form through the formation of new born neurons. These neurons tend to migrate to the damaged area to aid the regeneration process although what the right cellular environment is or the mechanism of the process in totality is not known to the Doctors. However, what the little known fact by research was that of the generation of two complex proteins by the newly forming blood vessels, are what trigger the thousands of immature neurons to the site of damage. Neurogenesis in human brain is the subject of study and research of modern medical science, one day that could promote brain repair after stroke.
What are Neurons?
Neurons are nerve cells consisting of three basic parts- (i) a cell body, (ii) an axon- a tube like extension and (iii) a dendrite – a tree like extension. The cell body contains a nucleus, which controls the cell’s activities and that contains the cell’s genetic material. The axon looks like a long tail and transmits messages from the cell. And dendrites look like the branches of a tree and receive messages for the cell. There is a tiny space across the axons and dendrites of adjacent neurons called ‘Synapse’ through which neurons communicate with each other giving electrical impulses and chemical signals. Thus the brain and the rest of the nervous system are functioning through the chain of neutrons, the study of which is still a Himalayan impossible task.
Protection and Prevention of Stroke:
(i) Now it is found that The University of Western Ontario has discovered a substance in tangerines that helps to prevent obesity and also offers protection against diabetes, the underlying disease is said to be responsible for most heart attacks and strokes. Green and leafy vegetables are good for heart patient.
(ii)
In the older age the activity of the neurons decreases and that effects in the process of thinking and remembering. It becomes necessary to keep the neurons active by indulging in the activity of reading, writing and other kinds of mental works. Besides the exercise of brain, the adsorption of proper nutrient is also necessary. Unhealthy eating and lack of proper nutrition makes the brain inactive in the older age.

The study further shows that people who eat a diet containing nutrient found in animal products like eggs, meats, cheese, fish and other dairy products are susceptible to cardiovascular disease because of sustaining micro-organisms called lecithin in our digestive tracts.

Thanks for this informative Hub, my friend.
As one of those who is rapidly entering the time of "old age" I appreciate it very much.
Now gotta get a tangerine or three!
Love and peace
Tony
Hi, Tony, great hub and thank for the nice tips, tangerine and lemon can be the solution, what do you think about relaxation? It can calm the mind and controlling the blood pressure.
Thank you HP, for very timely and valuable information on braikns function during and after stroke. Thank you for sharing. Godspeed. creativeone59
I love this informative and easy to understand hub on neurons. I learn so much from you HP. Thank you for taking the time to write this excellent article. I left you a comment earlier, but it did not go through. Rated up and pushed every button! :) vocalcoach

HP,
its funny with 3 strokes myself- only wish i get some of that regenerating going on....but i guess the places my strokes are were "widespread" and "not a good area for regeneration" oh well I guess I can't win em all-I guess dodgin death was where it stops oh well 1/2 my brain is better than being a vegetable.... altough i am fond of beets.
Great job
